At Dr.Bill, we know that a resilient healthcare system begins with well-supported healthcare providers. That’s why one year ago, we partnered with the Ontario Medical Foundation (OMF) to address the growing challenge of physician burnout — a critical issue affecting not only doctors but the quality of patient care across Ontario. Our $150,000 contribution to the OMF has since driven three impactful projects that are building community, strengthening resilience, and promoting wellness among physicians.

Three Transformative Initiatives in Physician Wellness

In collaboration with three dedicated teams, these initiatives have focused on creating sustainable support systems that prioritize physician wellbeing:

  1. Peer Coaching for Family Physicians: Led by Dr. Noah Ivers, MD, PhD, CCFP, this project introduces peer coaching to provide family physicians — especially those in underserved communities—with ongoing mentorship and support. The results from the first phase are promising: 39 peer guides have helped 32 physicians navigate workplace challenges, enhance mental health, and feel more connected. The second phase will extend this support to more physicians, enhancing access through a fully virtual model.
  2. Mindfulness Training Tailored for Physicians: Dr. Julie Maggi, MD, MSc, FRCPC, and Dr. Elli Weisbaum, BFA, MES, PhD, are leading a mindfulness training program designed specifically for physicians working with marginalized communities. This initiative addresses the unique pressures faced by these physicians, equipping them with tools to manage stress and prevent burnout. The program is on track to complete this phase by December 2024, with data analysis and insights to follow in early 2025.
  3. A Framework for Wellness Program Evaluation: Dr. Sanjeev Sockalingam, MD, MHPE, FRCPC, and Dr. Treena Wilkie, MD, FRCPC, have been developing a framework to assess  wellness programs across Ontario. Through an extensive literature review and surveys with over 120 physicians, the team is creating guidelines to improve the effectiveness of these programs and ensure they meet the needs of healthcare providers. The findings from this project will be presented at key national    conferences, including the Canadian Psychiatric Association Conference and the International Conference on Physician Health. These forums will help refine wellness strategies that can be tailored to meet the unique needs of physicians across Ontario.

Moving Forward Together

At Dr.Bill, we’re pleased to see tangible progress toward supporting the wellbeing of physicians and, in turn, the care they provide to patients.

As Dr. Albert Ng, President of the OMF, shared, “These projects are positive steps in safeguarding the wellbeing of doctors and ensuring the highest level of care for patients.”
