Physicians’ hidden administrative burden: A story in numbers

Healthcare in Canada is at a decisive moment. From overcrowded emergency rooms, an ongoing shortage of skilled workers, and complicating factors like the spread of medical misinformation, the industry currently faces many significant obstacles. How we address those hurdles now will define how the ongoing story of Canada’s health care system unfolds.

Research increasingly shows that these issues affect not just patients, but the medical professionals who provide their care. In recent years, closer attention has been paid to the serious impact of career burnout on the wellbeing of physicians and other medical workers—and how it shapes the quality and quantity of care they can bring to the workplace.

Along with the regular demands of patient care, doctors also devote considerable time to non-clinical tasks—the paperwork and other administrative processes behind managing a medical practice. For many physicians, this added work presents a serious drain on their time and energy, thereby piling extra strain on an already overburdened workforce.

New insights into the toll of non-clinical administrative work

Identifying and better understanding these issues was the focus of our recent study, “Hiding in Plain Sight: The impact of non-clinical administrative demand on Canada’s physicians,” commissioned in partnership with Santis Health. In it, we surveyed 500 physicians on the effects of non-clinical work on their practice, with some eye-opening results, bringing to light important concerns that often go overlooked in the healthcare story.
