Since April 1st, 2020, if you bill for multiple surgeries, fee items 04708 and 04714 are no longer payable. The only exception is if you bill 04001 with 04714 – when a surgery starts as laparoscopic and later converts to an open procedure.

As a reminder, here are the specifics of the amendments:

  • PG04708 indicates a prolonged laparoscopic surgery (per 15 minutes or major portion thereof). This fee item is not payable if you bill for multiple surgical procedures.
  • PG04714 indicates a prolonged open surgery (per 15 minutes or major portion thereof). This fee item is not payable if you bill for multiple surgical procedures. The exception is that 04001 can be billed when a laparoscopic procedure is converted to open. G04714 is billed when an open case originally started as a laparoscopic procedure and will be paid after 2 hours total surgical time.

If you have any questions about these amendments or any other billing issues, feel free to get in touch with our team.
